HOBIE HEADS WEST

The preliminary organisation for the 2017 Hobie® Kayak Bream Series 9 Australian Championship, to be contested in Mandurah, Western Australia is finally complete

Three, 40ft shipping containers were packed and have departed the Hobie Cat Australasia factory in Huskisson, on the New South Wales south coast, and are in-transit, crossing the vast open spaces of the outback to Western Australia.

Once the containers arrive in “the west”, they will be met by an advance party from the Hobie factory, who will position them ready for the unload. It will take a crew of around ten people, 3 full days to unload and prepare the kayaks, and then set up the championship infrastructure at the Mandurah Quay Resort event site.

Competitors will fly in from around Australia on November 14 and 15 to Perth airport, where they will be picked up and transported in shuttle buses to the event resort. A special, thanks goes out to one of the competitors, Geoff Alford, from the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), for volunteering to organise these shuttles, making travel arrangements more convenient for his fellow anglers.

The tournament will kick off with a briefing on the evening of November 15 before a non-competitive pre-fish day on the 16th, where anglers get to feel out the tournament arena and further develop strategies they have been formulating since qualifying. The three-day championship then commences in the early hours of Friday Nov 17 and concludes mid afternoon on Sunday Nov 19.

Local Western Australian anglers will go into the event with a distinct advantage and would have to be considered favourites to claim championship glory. However, there are some real gun anglers coming from “over east”, with many having previously, performed successfully, in unfamiliar environments across Australia, and around the world.

The 2017 Australian Championship is set to be a real hum dinger!
