David Magner Takes Out Round One Of The Hobie® B.A.S.S. Australia Nation Kayak Series At Lake Macdonald

On Sunday February 1, Lake Macdonald in Queensland hosted round one of the 2015 Hobie® B.A.S.S. Australia Nation Kayak Series.

Situated in an idyllic rural setting, just five minutes from Cooroy, and 15 minutes inland from the iconic Queensland tourist town of Noosa, last season’s grand final venue, was the perfect location to hold the opening round of the new series.

Lake Macdonald is held back by 6 Mile Creek Dam and its back water has a surface area of 260ha with an average depth of 6m. The lake is well stocked, with fish species including Saratoga, Golden Perch and Snub-nosed Gar as well as the target species for the tournament, Australian Bass.

Anglers pedalled off from the starting line on Sunday in excellent conditions, which remained constant throughout the session.

The tournament was a catch-photo-release (CPR) system where tournament competitors who caught fish placed their legal sized Bass on a standard measuring stick, took a photo to record the length and then released the fish. At the conclusion of session anglers arrived back on shore replaced their key tags on the board, completed their catch cards and handed their camera cards to the Tournament Scorer.

The fishing was tough and throughout the day anglers had been casting all types of crankbaits, spinnerbaits, surface lures, and soft plastics to entice the fish, which were generally finicky in the conditions. Anglers spread out and hit most of the natural structure on the lake, including lilly pads, muddy banks, weed beds, reeds and drop offs across the lake. At the end of the day, a relatively small number of anglers, caught, photographed and released their full catch of three legal Australian Bass in the session.

When all results were calculated and confirmed by the Tournament Director, David Magner from Bundaberg, Queensland took out the major prize with a 123 cm total aggregate fish length, comfortably ahead of runner up Glenn Hayter from The Oaks, NSW who had a 120 cm cm aggregate catch and Stephen Maas from Cedar Grove, Queensland, competing in his first bass tournament, whose 119 cm bag was good enough to take out the final place on the podium.

When asked, David Magner summed up his day on the water.
“That is the best I’ve ever fished, I couldn’t do any better than that and I’m glad I won. ”.

Winning Ways

Reflecting on what he thought gave him the winning edge on the day Magner said.
“My basic plan was not to go too far I figured with the dam being down a bit, most of the fish would be out here in the main basin and in previous tournaments I had wasted time trying to find fish.”.

Winning Tackle

Rod: Lox Yoshi 7ft Spin Rod
Reel: Shimano Symetre 2500
Line: Berkley Nanofil® 6lb
Leader: 12lb Silver Thread

Glenn Hayter Reels In Second Place

Glenn Hayter netted a catch of Bass that measured short of the tournament winner by 3 cm, but it was enough to give him an overall advantage in length of Enter Difference cm over third place finisher Enter Name.

Glenn Hayter summed up his day on the water.
“I lost a really good fish on the first cast and then had my bag by 7:30 and then it went quiet for about an hr and then 10 – 11 got about 20 legal fish, and few upgrades and then it stopped again”.
An excited Glen Hayter joins Dave Magner in qualifying for the 2015 Hobie® B.A.S.S. Australia Nation Kayak Australian Championship
